April 2008

One of the highlights of our music ministry in the first quarter of 2008 was the visit to our home on the Texas border by our daughter Linnea Witt of Roseburg, OR and one granddaughter, Graceful Mae, upon her graduation from High School, to celebrate Phil’s birthday. They accompanied us to our classes and chapel periods at Rio Grande Bible Institute and played (clarinet and flute) in the seminary orchestra. We also celebrated with 3 consecutive birthday suppers where friends were invited that played musical instruments. The meals were followed by hymnbook jam sessions lasting until bedtime! It was a delightful time—with no complaints from the neighbors!

We really didn’t know what to expect when we were invited by Noah Mendoza, a Nicaraguan pastor (the younger brother of Boanerges, a former student of mine at the Central American Theological Seminary in Guatemala) to a Christian camp north of McAllen, Texas. 1,000 young people arrived from all parts of the Rio Grande Valley here on the Mexican border hyped and ready for fun and fellowship. The young leader shared with me that the campers were encouraged to invite their non-Christian friends. I kept that in mind as I introduced the quartets that we sang and played. God blessed our music and the messages preached. Forty Hispanic youths asked Jesus Christ to come into their hearts and lives.

The four of us also played in the orchestra of a local English-speaking church’s Easter cantata and sang and played in a large Hispanic church on Easter evening. The congregation really enjoyed the original music we used to serve as a vehicle to bring many Scriptural passages right to the heart. The following day we put on our casual clothes and drove a little over an hour to South Padre Island and had a great time viewing the sand dunes, the surf, wading in the ocean and collecting sea shells.

Recently our Christian radio station (Radio Esperanza “Hope”) held a concert in RGBI and hundreds came. Many accepted Christ as their Savior and a number of young people expressed interest in studying the Word of God at our seminary. PTL!

Thanks for your part in our ministry of music at the Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, TX—and beyond!
